Symptoms of asthma in cats
Asthma is one of
the most commonly diagnosed respiratory diseases in cats and, as in humans, is
an untreatable but treatable condition.
- Asma pada kucing has several symptoms, including
coughing, difficulty breathing, rapid and noisy breathing, or wheezing.
- A typical asthmatic attack is manifested by
difficult breathing with an open mouth and obvious movements of the chest
and abdomen, even in stable cats, and requires immediate veterinary
intervention.
- In most cases the specific cause of Asma
pada kucing is not identifiable, however, some "triggering
events" can be recognized, especially exposure to cigarette smoke,
dusty litter, vapors of household cleaning products, pollen, mold, mites,
smoke from chimneys and candles and even some foods.
Cats of all ages and breeds and both sexes can be affected, with a greater likelihood of exposure to possible allergens in cats that can leave the house.
Dignosis of Asma pada kucing
Usually, for the diagnosis, we proceed by exclusion, for example; by carrying out a blood test to exclude heartworm or a stool examination to exclude lung parasites.
In general, the treatment involves corticosteroids & bronchodilators use. Ti can be administered in tablets, injections, or inhalation.
The latter route is in recent years preferred by many veterinarians, compared to tablets & injections. Because it seems to be more effective and less associated with side effects and risks.
Be careful, however, not to confuse coughing episodes with attempts to vomit or expel a hairball.
